Small Steps to Big Success: Achieving Your Goals Incrementally

In our “Just Do It” world, the path to our goals can often seem daunting. The secret lies not in monumental leaps, but in the power of small steps. In this blog, I’m going to tell you how to utilize that power to remove the blocks toward anything you want to achieve.  Each seemingly minor action we take builds upon the last, creating a momentum that can propel us to realize our aspirations. It’s also a great way to move gently through a period of liminal space (those moments when we find ourselves in a state of transition – the in-between phases of life-  a concept that, if embraced, can transform our lives and lead to significant personal growth covered in my December 2023 blog.

Initiating a new project or tackling a goal can be daunting. But taking one small step toward it is not. When tasks feel overwhelming, we naturally want to procrastinate.  … As each day adds up without progress, we get stuck, convince ourselves we didn’t really want our goal, or even believe we can’t do it. But completing one small step is easy, and that makes it easier to take the next. Before you know it, you’re on the path towards your goal.

Achievable Actions Build Confidence

Achievable has a really inviting ring to it, doesn’t it?  And that’s the power of small steps.  Every small step taken is a victory in itself.  When you do one, then another, something magical happens. It instills a sense of accomplishment, and that generates a boost that becomes a kind of fuel.  When you see yourself successfully completing tasks, no matter how small, your belief in your ability to tackle the next one is reinforced with less effort. This growing confidence often makes you eager to continue, and before you know it, you’re naturally finding you’ve built a positive cycle.

Small Steps Create Momentum

See every small step as significant, because it contributes to progress, just as a single snowflake contributes to an avalanche. Pat yourself on the back for each one. With each action, you gain momentum! This is the essence of how big goals are achieved – whether it’s effective project management, to sorting out a messy garage or choosing healthier foods, one meal at a time –not in one fell swoop, but through consistent, dedicated effort.

The Role of Consistency

Consistency in taking those small steps is key. Regular action, even if in tiny doses, accumulates over time. Imagine adding a brick each day to what will eventually become a grand structure. Each small step you take is that building block towards your dreams and goals.

Embrace Your Freedom to Choose

The super power of small steps is not so evident, but I love thinking of it in this light: each is a choice you make towards progress. It reinforces the idea that you are in control of your journey, and every little step is a testament to your commitment to your goals. Each is to be celebrated. This perspective can be a game changer!

The journey to achieving big goals is often a series of small, consistent steps. It’s about starting, building confidence, gaining momentum, staying consistent, and recognizing your power to choose your path. By breaking down your goals into smaller tasks, you not only make the journey more manageable but also more enjoyable. If you need guidance in breaking down your goals into achievable steps, or just seek support in your journey, feel free to reach out. Let’s take those small steps together towards your big dreams.

The 2024 desk calendar I created for my Shop is perfect to use to support this, whether crossing off each day you did your small step or marking off a new self care habit you want to focus on each month (adding 1 more glass of water, taking one full minute just to center and breathe every day, to planning a weekly call with a different friend or family member). It’s also a way to bring art to your desk or counter.  Find it HERE
